12 Month Checkup

Curran had her one year checkup today {a few weeks late}. I thought it was at 11:30, so we got there, checked in, and about 30 minutes later someone came and told me it wasn't until 2:00. I swear, I have turned into the biggest ditz since having a child.

Her stats are: height = 29 in {50th percentile} and weight = 19 lbs 5 oz {20th percentile}. I think her head was 18 in {the first time I posted this I put cm...that would be teeny tiny. see ditz comment above :) }. Not sure where that is on the growth charts, but judging by the mom-o-meter, it's fairly large because I have a hard time getting her shirts over her head without feeling like I'm going to break her neck.

She got 2 vaccines and a finger prick to check a lead level since we live in an old house. The finger prick was not fun because of the amount of blood they had to squeeze out. And C kept on bleeding through the bandaid, so it looked like a crime scene in there by the time I got everything cleaned up and a new bandaid put back on. As any other mother knows, it is nearly impossible to keep a child from putting that bandaged finger in their mouth. C kept trying to pull the bandaid off with her mouth, but after she got her big shots I gave her a pacifier, so I thought she would forget about the finger. Well when we got home, I saw that her finger bandaid was missing and was no where to be found. I'm not sure if she had a little snack on the way home or what, but I'll be keeping my eyes out for that bandaid over the next several days, if you know what I mean.

I asked the doctor about how much milk C should be drinking at this point. I have still been giving her a bottle every 4 hours or so {usually about 4 bottles/18 ounces a day}. She has been drinking only out of a sippy cup at school, but at home she would only drink a sip or two of milk before throwing the cup down {she drinks water/juice out of them just fine}. So I have just been lazy and letting her continue to drink out of the bottle.

Well the doctor said that she really doesn't need those "bolus" feedings of milk anymore, and I can just give her milk at mealtimes. She said to wean off the bottles over a few weeks and drop the night time feeding. That just seems so weird to me, and she agreed that it is hard to adjust to that thinking, but she says that babies this age really don't need that much milk anymore. SO, I guess that is the major task at hand is to drop the bottles.

They said she could eat anything at this point except peanut butter/nuts.

She also told me that at 20 lbs I could turn C's car seat around, but I think she is still pretty small, so I'm going to leave her rear-facing for a while.

She was pleased with her skills: walking, talking, waving, etc. So everything seems to be on track.

What does "bolus" mean? Is that medical lingo or something, ML? I mean we aren't ALL nurses here ;) I googled it and still couldn't figure it out!

For what it's worth, we decided we'll just wait until she gets uncomfortable to turn the seat around. In MS they say that it is best for a child to be rear facing until they're FOUR YEARS OLD. Obviously, absurd, but I say the long your can do it the better!

SD, a bolus is something that is given one time or in a large quantity. If someone was dehydrated and went to the hospital, they would receive a bolus of fluid (i.e. a large bag of saline). So in this case, the dr meant bolus as a large feeding, 4-6 oz every 4 hrs or so, as opposed to letting a child drink milk in smaller quantities throughout the day.

And we'll definitely be keeping C rear-facing a while longer, probably until she's closer to 2.
